LYNARA'S KINGDOM AND AMBER BLACK
SIZZLING DAWN AND HENNA TURATH
LYNARA'S WORKOUT FOR THE HIOLIO DERBY
DAWN'S WORKOUT FOR THE PARFAIR DERBY
Three races this month? Are you sure about this? The ever stoic Henna Turath was being reprimanded by Amber Black for what the woman was viewing as potential overracing. But Henna was not bothered by her boss, and instead proceeded to explain just what he reasoning was. I know Dawn better than you do, Amber. And trust me, she's living off of these races. She loves them. She's growing stronger and stronger and I can't imagine her not having a heavy racing schedule. She needs it in order to grow. You know Secretariat? He was worked really hard before the Belmont, because he was the type of horse that grew from hard work. Dawn is the same. Amber's eyes were thoughtful as she considered what Henna was saying. Listen, I understand that. But Dawn isn't Secretariat and she's only two years old, and a filly. Henna couldn't help snorting. Dawn certainly didn't look like a filly, and she didn't act like one - but she did see Amber's point, and nodded.
She'll race in the Parfair this week and the Flagalt next week, and then she's getting three weeks off. She's making her GHF debut in late March. I don't want to run her in the Finish Cup yet. She's our little secret, after all. Amber sighed but accepted her jockey's decision. The two women parted to prepare their mounts for today's workout. Henna knew that she was working her very intense filly against Amber's crazy Lynara's Kingdom, who had shone so much talent so far this year and was thus far undefeated and teetering on the edge of grade three. It would be a tough workout - but Dawn lived for competition. She relished tough opponents and was all for hard work. And Henna was right there with her filly. They were both super competitive and that was why they worked so well together.
Amber opened up the stall door to the three year old filly who was making a name for herself. Lynara's Kingdom eyed her lazily before going back to her hay. It was clear that the temperamental filly's mood today was lazy and a bit docile. Amber knew she would perk right up as soon as she was on the track. She grinned, grabbed a brush and set to grooming her. She was getting the filly ready for the Hiolio Derby this week against Native Gold, The Goodness and Knight Rousseau. All of which presented excellent competition and horses that Amber now had the confidence she could defeat. Lynara was adaptable and so was she. They would take whatever was thrown at them by this group and throw it right back.
Henna was already done with Dawn and waiting impatiently for Lynara and Amber. When they finally arrived she half considered asking what the heck had taken them so long but held her mouth shut. She, too, had been considering Dawn's field, in the Parfair Derby. There were two horses from Witch Creek and Phantie's full sister Midnight Thriller entered and the odds of pulling a top three finish were looking a bit slim here. On paper they didn't look like too much this season compared to Dawn's perfect season of top threes against older horses so far - but they all had the advantage of age and their owners loved their horses very much. That always counted against them. Henna loved Dawn but when it came down to that, Dawn was younger. Dawn was the front runner. She needed to be dominant. They were going to be stalked and pressured by two horses with an additional closer to worry about in the back. Henna hoped they were ready for this. She felt that they were, and knew that even if they weren't Dawn would bounce right back after it anyway.
Amber nodded, a smile on her face. Lynara was not being a huge pain in the butt today as she was occasionally known to be, and Amber was appreciating that deeply right now. She needed to focus for a bit. Lynara's talent was impressive and Amber was looking at the Wire Finish Cup Mile. She knew Lynara could take the competition there on and she was looking forward to it. Dawn, as per usual, was in a very competitive mood and Amber got the feeling that Dawn would spike Lynara's own competitive levels. When the two fillies were turned and were warming up together, Amber's hypothesis was proved correct. Dawn's consistent and constant challenges, made through glares, tosses of the head and various other methods, were getting on Lynara's nerves. The volatility of the filly's temperament was shown in true form as she became harshly disobedient and even more ready to go. She pulled at the reins fiercely and she glared right back. The With A Snap daughter didn't back down from challenges. And she had inherited her mother's need to have what she wanted right away. And she wanted to pound her competition into the ground. '
They were flying already and the gallop hadn't even started yet. After a mile of cantering the signal was given and both riders dropped into the appropriate positions, letting out the reins. Driven by the need to be dominant, Dawn went instantly to the lead, but Lynara wouldn't let her have it. The constant nagging of the two year old filly had fueled something within Lynara, and it was almost with a rage that she took to the dirt track. The fighting was instantly intense. Dawn didn't back down and Lynara was too furious to care. Amber and Henna both felt the helplessness of the situation. There was only one solution to such a problem.
They held on for dear life and let their horses go.
The cyclone of Lynara was met by the bay thunderstorm that was Dawn. It was the clash of the soon to be titans, of two fillies bent on the destruction of the other. Their eyes shot lightning and they flew, creating hurricane force winds. The eyes of their riders teared as though there was rain dripping into them. Holding on for life, the two forced themselves not to close their eyes as their horses duked it out. It was Lynara who was pulling away slightly and Dawn who wasn't having that, digging in as much as she could and reaching top speed. It was a closing gap and the wire was long past them, but neither filly was done yet and their riders knew it was time to try and pull the impossible horses up. A feat worthy of Hercules, it took a while to get them to even canter, and even then they were enraged.
The sun peaked over the horizon, setting the battlefield aflame. Filly met filly and tempers burned. This would not be forgotten. This would be settled. And their riders, despite the sweat covering their mounts and themselves, knew they were ready. They were exhilarated like nothing else and were filled with nothing but calm purpose. The two fillies would meet and duke it out for a long time. This new rivalry would not be going anywhere.
